Sites not opening - BSNL DNS Issue

11-11-2013

We have been receiving complaints from several customers particularly on BSNL that their websites are not resolving. There is no issue with your website or server. You can verify this by doing a check on your website from www.alertra.com and you can also see a screenshot of your website loading from http://66.228.44.251/ (enter your domain name at that URL).

This issue is being caused by default ISP DNS servers not responding correctly to lookups. To overcome this, please update your DNS resolver IPs in your modem / router (to fix complete network for multiple devices) or TCP/IP settings on your computer from the default values to one of the following sets

Google DNS (Steps to configure at https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/ )

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Or OpenDNS (Steps to configure at http://208.69.38.205/ )

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

You will be able to access common sites that you access frequently due to cached DNS on your local system but most new site you try to access may give issues unless you update your DNS. Again, this issue is not with your website or the hosting server but with your ISP DNS resolvers which have been having issues since yesterday (Sunday, 10/11/2013). Please do contact your ISP as well in this regard if you do not wish to keep using google or openDNS resolvers. However, we do recommend using them instead of your ISPs resolvers as it would be more reliable.
