WIN19: Server Restored

05-01-2009

4.43pm: Windows server WIN19 was rebooted as it was not responding. The server did not come back online normally and is being investigated by a technician at the data center.

5pm: The server had started up on reboot but without network. We rebooted it again to see if that corrects the issue but it did not help. The data center tech is still checking the server and we working with them to resolve this at the earliest.

5.25pm: Data center tech have tried to reboot the server in safe mode to check the issue but have been unable to resolve it. They will now prepare to run a hardware test on the server to see if there are any hardware related issues which may be causing this.

5.35pm: Server was rebooted with a rescue kernel and hardware test is being performed now.

6.20pm: Hardware test is showing disk issues and OS related issues which are preventing the server from booting up normally. We will be replacing the drive, reinstalling the OS, control panel and will then restore data. This is expected to take several hours. We do not have an exact estimate yet but will keep posting updates here as available.

7.30pm: Software install is in progress. Finishing Windows Server installation at this time. MSSQL and Plesk installations will be done shortly after which we can begin restoring data.

8.20pm: MSSQL installed. Plesk install is in progress. Data restore will be started once that completes.

9.45pm: Plesk and OS installation has been completed. Checking and organizing data to begin restores.

6th Jan 2009
------------
12am: Backup data size is very large and is taking time putting it in the plesk repository to restore. We are working on the same.

1am: The previous primary disk was still causing in the running of the server causing it to go offline repeatedly. We have now disconnected that drive and are working on the restore process.

1.20am: We are facing issues restoring backup to the control panel. Issue has been escalated to Parallels (Plesk)

3.20am: We have not received a suitable solution and have rebuilt the backup repository manually. Initiating insertion of data into active plesk data.

5.30am: Restore into live accounts is in progress

8.30am: Restore is still in progress. About half the accounts have been restored and are working. This process is presently automated - accounts are getting restored one after the other.

11.21am: Accounts are still getting restored. We estimate that it will take another 4-6 hours for this process to complete after which we will need to try and reconnect the old drive to get mail data.

3.30pm: After about 70% of the accounts completed restoring, the restore process had hung. We have waited expecting it to resume but it did not. We are checking the same now.

6.30PM: We are still working on the restore process.

10pm: After a lot of troubleshooting we have been able to identify what was causing the issue with restores and have resolved that. Restores have finally started again and are in progress. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused due to this.

12:30am: Restore had an error and stopped. Checking the same.

1.50am: Accounts getting restored again. We are monitoring progress.

6.45am: Restore had an error again and is being resumed. Few accounts remain to be restored.

8am: All websites have been restored.
